JPEG.io is a web app that converts your images into highly optimized JPEG format with a simple and easy-to-use user interface. It uses Kraken.io’s proprietary JPEG optimization algorithms to convert an image to a progressive JPEG format with the smallest possible size without losing any image quality.
So, what’s a progressive JPEG and why using it?
A progressive JPEG is an image created using compression algorithms that load the image in successive waves until the entire image is downloaded. It gives the visual perception to the visitor that the loading is faster as the user can see the whole image straight away, as opposed to the usual way which loads gradually from top to bottom line by line.
A 30% loaded un-optimized JPEG is like this, with the 70% blank space at the bottom:
And the 30% loaded progressive JPEG looks like this, where the visitors can get the sense of what the whole picture looks like even at the 30% loaded rate.
A progressive JPEG image can also be much optimized in terms of getting a much smaller output size, leading to not only visual perception but real faster load times. In result, having optimized JPEG images will improve the page speed rank as well.
How to use JPEG.io
Using the web app is very easy. Simply drop the image into the drop space and then download the optimized image at the bottom of the page in a short time. You can also import the images from Dropbox, Google Drive or Box.
If you have multiple files to convert, you can drag all of them into the drop zone at once and download all the optimized images in a zipped archive file.
JPEG.io is completely free to use and supports almost all major image formats, including:
- JPG
- PNG
- GIF
- SVG
- BMP
- EPS
- PSD
- TIFF
- WEBP
