How To Fix Chrome Font Issue After Upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1

Have upgraded more than dozen Windows computers to Windows 10, this is the first time I encountered a font issue in Chrome. And it happens to a lot of websites including Gmail and some of the sites I visit almost on daily basis. All fonts appeared to be small, thin and squeeze altogether. It’s really annoying because it makes the reading experience quite horrible.

The fundamental of the issue is something related to the system fonts in Windows that probably got corrupted during the upgrade. But there isn’t a quick way to get it fixed easily and permanently.

So I took another quick route instead. Going to Chrome’s flag experiments list and disabled one called “DirectWrite windows” which enables the use of experimental DirectWrite font rendering system. Everything looks back to normal after the browser relaunched.

It’s not a perfect fix but does make things look better in Chrome. I would call it a temporary fix and I will update this post when there is a more permanent fix surfaced.
